In Volume 12 of the Encyclopedia of Photographic and Fine Art Ink Jet Printing I have a chapter covering archival testing of various print varnishes.
Here is an example of the effects of print varnish on a Type F air dried surface over a span of 40+ years. The print was made in early 1970’s and sprayed with semi-gloss print varnish designed for photographs. I can’t recall the name of the company who made the varnish.
If you enlarge the photo and look at the red circled areas you will see the problems the spray varnish caused. The defects don’t show up that well in the reproduction, it is a lot worse than is shown here and covers the entire print surface.
