The Olympus Pen M43 is one helluva little street cam. I used the M43 extensively in all type of conditions for almost a year. The main benefit of the M43 is the size- it is like having nothing in your hand. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had problems, threats and actual attacks for having a big cam in my hand. Stealth is what you get with a M43.
Even though I loved the results, I eventually had to give up the M43 because of the hard to adjust on-the-fly controls. I shoot manual a lot and all the push buttons on the little Olympus Pen was just too much for my shooting style. I don’t want to end up fondling my cameras and missing the shot. I hope someone makes an old school manual controlled M43. Something like the Fuji-X or Leica.
The Olympus Pen produces beautiful results. The high end glass is $$$, but it offers superb IQ. I’d love to keep shooting the M43 if they had simplified manual controls. Sadly, the camera fondling engineers keep making things worse. They have added touch screen to the mix. Now, the M43’s keep getting screwed up almost if you breath on them.
I discuss camera fondlers in depth here:
The beauty of manual controls is you can adjust your cam without even looking at it. In Amsterdam’s Red Light District photography is banned. The shots below are all candid’s and done with a Fuji X. I could adjust the Fuji by counting the clicks and didn’t have to even look at it. I could never shoot anything like this with the M43…
Here is my report on the Fuji-X E1
If they made a manual controlled M43 I could have possibly used it. The worse thing the engineers ever invented was program dial to replace the shutter speed dial. Then they made it even worse by replacing the program dial with push button menus. That is what happen when camera fondling engineers design things. If they were doc / street photogs they would know better.
Leica perfected eons ago what was needed in a documentary camera. All the Japanese had to do was copy it and make it affordable. What do we get, dummied down lenses with no focus scale, no aperture ring, hard to adjust manual controls and Fuji’s ‘wonderful’ focus-by-wire.
Well, enough talk. Here are a few sample shots done with the 12 mp Olympus Pen M43.
